Goodbye Arkansas Prison System

When I took this photo at Tucker Maximum Security Prison in Arkansas, I had no idea that it would be my last visit with my friends there. All three of them were released on August 19, 2011, and all involved would be happy to never again see the inside of a prison.

Bangkok

Our last full day in the amazing turmoil of Bangkok, Thailand. A few more attempts at some shopping, a visit to downtown Bangkok's protective, 4-headed Ganesh, a brief debate about whether to try a Thai McDonald's (we both agreed not to. Maybe next trip). Then we took the Skytrain and a taxi to one last dinner with the family and a viewing (projected onto a large screen) of all of our wedding photos, plus photos from our Hollywood wedding party. Our friend Poppy joined us. A very nice evening - I only wish I wasn't so exhausted. Some of the rare downsides of traveling are: you never look your best, you're jet-lagging, dealing with various other travel-related issues and dealing with a lack of sleep from the sheer excitement of being here. I'm pretty sure my new family understands. It's very difficult to say goodbye to them. I really hope that my USA family and friends can someday meet them all.

We're On The Road To Bangkok

Heading home after 3 days up country in Pak Chong. I had a wonderful time there that I'll remember for the rest of my life. On our way home we visited another house that Miu's family bought. A really beautiful place that's being fixed up and renovated. Then we went into the town nearby to take Miu's father's dog to the vet. Then we headed back towards Bangkok into this sunset.
The day before, Miu's father brought out a cart with some young trees. He said, (Miu translated) that we were going to go out to the edge of one of his rice fields and plant the trees together, so each time we come back to visit him we could visit our tree, too. During our walk, we picked various fruits and vegetables and watched Miu's dad chop huge bunches of bananas from the trees. It started to rain pretty hard while we were out there, but the weather was fine for being soaked - not too cold or hot. Miu and I planted our tree, then her grandmother and her grandmother's sister planted one, and then Miu's parents planted the third one together.
It was one of those great moments that you want to remember with perfect clarity. The rain, the wind in trees, the waves in the bright green rice fields and my new family in this amazing country.

Pictures of Food

Another amazing meal in the country. I even helped pick some of this. It stopped raining a few times while we were in Pak Chong, and on our last day there Miu and I took a very nice bike ride through the rice farms and rural neighborhoods. We explored and old temple, a middle school, markets and cow fields. It was a perfect day to wander Thailand on bikes.

The Road

This is the road that leads to Miu's father's place. There's been so much rain lately that pretty much everything everywhere is wet - or at least damp. I took this photo from the front of the house - which is to my right - and behind me is the guesthouse, which fortunately is up on stilts, like all the houses I've seen around here. There are water buffalo wandering, rice fields, banana trees, and various other fruit trees around. A short walk can produce a big bag full of produce. I can imagine how much more accessible and peaceful it would be here if it wasn't pouring. But the rain is certainly adding a sense of isolation. I feel like I've never been anywhere near this far from home in every way imaginable.

Guesthouse

This is our home for a few days. It almost looks like a treehouse. Handcrafted from local hardwoods, and furnished with handmade benches and chairs built by Miu's father. We're in Pak Chong, which is about 3 hours northeast of Bangkok.
The insect sounds at night are almost overwhelming. So many odd noises that I've never heard before.
It's hard to see very well in this photo because the sky is so dark and gray, and it's raining pretty hard.
