Miu negotiating with a tuk tuk driver. I'm lurking nearby trying not to show my farang face so that she'll get a better price. Once the deal is made, I emerge from the shadows and join her in the back seat, and we go flying into the insane precision of the Bangkok traffic system. It's amazing that there aren't 40 car pile-ups at every intersection, but somehow they manage to give and take just enough to avoid constant disaster. Traffic can certainly be crazy in Bangkok, but it's an interesting thing to witness when it's moving. Motorbikes and cars get close enough to each other to peel off bumperstickers, and pedestrians live about a millimeter away from certain doom. Once you get past the terror, through, a tuk tuk ride is a really exhilerating way to see (and smell) the city streets.
